1914 Humber
Many thanks to Robert Silverwood for this picture. The rider and owner of the bike is his Great Aunt, Alice Eliza (Lisa) Alldred (née Silverwood) and the sidecar passenger is his Grandmother Doris McAuslan. He believes the photo was taken between 1918 and 1922 by his Grandfather Robert Bissell Silverwood, Lisa’s brother. He married Doris in 1922.

Thanks to Leon for identifying the machine “It’s a water-cooled Humber of about 1913. Note the foot starter attached to the back wheel. It’s a bit hard to see, but from the two foot pedals at the front I’d say that the machine has a ROC hub gear. Most luxurious!”

And thanks to Max for actually placing the bike as a 1914 model:

“Would just like to point out that the from well documented Original Humber Factory notes on all Motorcycles produced each year by Humber the very first reference to a Water-Cooled Humber Single Cylinder 3 1/2HP model is 1904 – also offered again in 1905 but as a 4 1/2HP Model. The next reference to a W.C. 3 1/2HP single model is not until 1914; for 1915 and 1916 the only water cooled Model offered is their 6 hp flat twin. The 1914 W.C. 3 1/2HP Single of 84mm Bore x 90mm Stroke is shown in this picture. This Model was only offered by Humber for 1914 at UK63Pounds and had the 3-speed Sturmey Archer Hub Gear fitted from New as Standard. The last Humber Model offered with a ROC hub fitted was 1912. The ROC Hub had a live axle which required very large Ball Bearings built into the frame each side and it clearly shows in the photograph not to be the case with the featured Humber.
