The Matchless G50, unlike its predecessor, the Matchless G3/L, was created to be a racing bike, and to compete directly with the Manx Norton. The G50 had a top speed of 135 mph, had a chain-driven four-speed gearbox, and front and rear drum brakes.
The power of the G50 was less than the Manx Norton but it was much lighter and could handle corners with greater maneuverability. However competitive, the G50 was not compliant with American racing regulations and could not be used in competition.
In response, the G50 CSR was developed. This new racer featured a gold finish on the engine casing and came in red and black or blue.
